Preventing Ice Dams in Southern Minnesota

If you live in the southern Minnesota, then you know the winter season brings with it not only cold and freezing temperatures but ice and snow which can cause a variety of problems for your home.  While looking at icicles hanging from roofs does look beautiful, it can also point to an underlying problem and one of your home’s worst enemies, ice dams.

Ice dams are those large chunks of ice that are on the edge of your roof that prevents melting snow from draining off of your roof the way it should.  Ice dams occur when warmer temperatures or heat escaping from your attic melts the snow sitting on the roof.  As this snow begins to thaw it runs down to the colder part of the roof and freezes.  Any ice that has formed along the edge of your roof can be the beginning of problems, an ice dam.  Because of the ice dam the thawing snow pools behind the ice that has already accumulated at the edge of your roof, backing up underneath your roofing shingles. Eventually the water will work its way into your home running down walls and ceilings, ruining drywall, insulation and paint, and staining wood around windows and doors.  So, not only is there damage to your roof, but to the inside of your home as well.  In addition to that, if an ice dam does break free it can take with it the roofing shingles as well as gutters and can possibly do damage to whatever it falls on.

While checking sealing, insulation and venting in the attic and eaves will help to keep ice dams from forming, not everyone is able to make the necessary improvements.  Crawling around the attic or climbing up on the roof may not be something everyone can do or feels comfortable doing.  Instead, let the professional roofers at Ronningen Roofing take on the task of ensuring your home is ready for the winter season.  Our experienced roofing team will come in and access any damage, discuss it with you and make all necessary repairs to get your home safe and secure once again.  In fact, don’t wait for an ice dam to do damage.  We will come to your home, do the necessary inspections, explain the best solutions available and make all necessary fixes to prevent ice dams from occurring so when winter comes you can relax.
